Coursework

Listed below are many of the courses I have completed during my three and a half years at Clemson. These courses have further developed my ability to think critically about various topics and communicate complex information in both Spanish and English. 

Spanish Courses

SPAN 2010: Intermediate Spanish

Intermediate level Spanish course that deepens students' understanding of the language through speaking, listening, reading, and writing exercises. This course also provides a brief overview of grammar and vocabulary.

SPAN 2020: Intermediate Spanish

A continuation of SPAN 2010 that furthers' students understanding of Spanish grammar. Includes additional practice writing, speaking, listening, and reading. 

SPAN 3020: Intermediate Spanish Grammar and Composition

Examines Spanish verbs, idioms, and vocabulary on an intermediate level. Utilizes written assignments to improve student's knowledge of grammatical structures in Spanish. 

SPAN 3070:
The Hispanic World: Spain

Analyzes culture in Spain, including social, historical, and political. Emphasis is placed on the impact of Francisco Franco's leadership during the 20th century. 

SPAN 3150:
Spanish for Health Professionals

Provides overview of human biology and anatomy in Spanish. As it is designed for students pursing healthcare professions, the course emphasizes Spanish medical terminology. 

SPAN 3040: Intro to Hispanic Literary Forms

Examines various works of 19th and 20th century Spanish and Spanish American literature. Several forms of literature are discussed, including fiction, poetry, and drama.  

TLDO 3233: Christian, Muslim, Jewish Art: Toledo

Study abroad course that provides insight into how the three cultures have influenced Spanish art and architecture through the years. Utilizes onsite visits as a primary method of instruction. 

SPAN 4180: Technical Spanish for Health Management Professionals

Analyzes the structure and function of  countries in Latin America and the Carribean from a managerial viewpoint. 

TLDO 3706: Colloquial Spanish

Study abroad course that instructs students how to utilize colloquial Spanish in its spoken form. Analyzes how colloquial language changes based on age, social, and regional background. 

TLDO 3007: Comparative Public Health

Study abroad course that examines the function and structure of the Spanish health care system. Compares this system to the health care system in other countries, such as Singapore, France, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. 

SPAN 4190: Health and the Hispanic Community

Examines how various social and cultural factors affect health in the Hispanic community. 

Health Courses

HLTH 2020:
Introduction to Public Health

Introduces public health care delivery systems and various factors affecting health. It also analyzes preventative disease measures taken by public health professionals. 

HLTH 2980:
Human Health and Disease

Summary of major human diseases and conditions from both a biological and psychological standpoint. Provides instruction for ideal health practices, such as exercising and maintaining a healthy diet. 

HLTH 2400:
Determinants of Health Behavior

Analyzes the cultural, social, and environmental factors that affect health behaviors. Also discusses the theoretical framework behind health treatment and prevention.

HLTH 3800: 
Epidemiology

Examines the origin and distribution of disease through statistical methods. This course analyzes the determinants of disease through the concept of the epidemiologic triad, which works to explain how the host, pathogen, and environment can affect disease frequency. 

HLTH 4900: Research and Evaluation Strategies in Public Health

Provides an in-depth view of the research process within public health. Discusses important ethical, moral, and legal considerations when conducting health research.

HLTH 4700: Global Health

Analyzes the manner in which public health programs are designed, implemented, managed, and evaluated around the globe. Emphasizes the importance of cultural humility in healthcare settings. 

HLTH 2030: 
Overview of Healthcare Systems

Introduces the major characteristics of the healthcare delivery system in the United States. Emphasizes the function of various health insurance plans in the U.S., such as Medicare and Medicaid.

HLTH 4110: Health of At-Risk Children and Families

Discusses how drug and/or alcohol abuse, mental health, poverty, food insecurity, incarceration, homelessness, and other factors affect the health of children and their families. Places an emphasis on early intervention strategies. 

HLTH 3100: Women's Health Issues

Examines common health issues that women experience. Explores the social, economic, environmental, behavioral, and political factors that affect women's health.

Science Courses

BIOL 1030 and 1050: General Biology I and Lab

Introduces students to the evolution of cells, cellular activities, genetics, and animal diversity. Accompanied by lab.

BIOL 1040 and 1060: General Biology II and Lab

Continuation of BIOL 1040 that analyzes human anatomy and physiology, plant physiology, and ecology. Lab instructs students how to conduct biological experiments and to make conclusions based on the results.   

BIOL 2220 and 2221: Human Anatomy and Physiology I and Lab

Introduces students to basic concepts in human anatomy and physiology, such as cells and tissues, sensory organs, and the skeletal, nervous, integumentary, and muscular systems. Accompanied by lab.

BIOL 2230 and 2231: Human Anatomy and Physiology II and Lab

Continuation of BIOL 2220 that discusses fluid and electrolyte balance and the endocrine, reproductive, respiratory, cardiovascular, lymphatic, urinary, and digestive systems. Accompanied by lab.

CH 1010 and 1011: General Chemistry and Lab

An overview of fundamental chemistry concepts, including chemical reactions, symbolic representation, and molecular structure.

CH 1020 and 1021: General Chemistry and Lab

Continuation of CH 1020 that examines chemical equilibrium, rate of reactions, and electrochemistry. Also includes an introduction into organic chemistry. Accompanied by lab. 

BCHM 3050: Essential Elements of Biochemistry

Examines the structure, synthesis, metabolism, and function of biomolecules of living organisms.

GEN 3000: Fundamental Genetics 

Analyzes Mendelian genetics, the chemical and physical basis of heredity, and population genetics in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

MICR 3050 and 3051: General Microbiology and Lab

Explores the structure, function, classification, distribution, and cultivation of microorganisms. Accompanied by lab.
